High Intensity Focused Ultrasound PDF Print E-mail

HIFU(High intensity focused ultrasound) technology delivers micro-focused ultrasound energy to dermal and SMAS(superficial muscular aponeurotic system) layers in a non-invasive way for face lifting, skin tightening and wrinkle treatment.

Q. Is HIFU Safe?

A. Ultrasound energy has been used in medical imaging for over 50 years. In addition, the procedure has been cleared by the FDA after demonstrating its safety in clinical studies.

Q. What is HIFU?

A. HIFU specifically targets the Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System (SMAS) the area addressed by surgeons during a surgical facelift procedure. The ultrasound energy delivered precisely to this area results in lifting, skin tightening and increased collagen production.

Q. How many treatments are recommended?

A. Most patients need only a single treatment per year. While those with a fair amount of laxity may need two treatments per year. Annual touch-up treatments can also help slow down the rate of skin aging.

Q. What regions can be treated?

A. Currently, sonoQueen is apporved for use in face and neck treatment. Clinical studies are ongoing throughout the world to investigate its use for treating other anatomical regions.

Q. How long does the treatment take?

A. A full face treatment takes 30-40 minutes, while a partial face or brow lift treatment can take around 15 minutes—neither with any downtime.

Q. Who is a good candidate for HIFU?

A. Typically those in their mid-thirties and mid-forties are the best candidates. While this is not replace surgery, it is appropriate for those who want some lifting and tightening through non-surgical means.

Q. Is there any downtime?

A. HIFU is an entirely non-invasive procedure and as such, there is no downtime. You will be able to return to your normal activities immediately.

Q. How does HIFU create immediate treatment result?

A. Collagen fibers begin to denature and shrink immediately over 58 threshold. On the other hand, collagen begins to die above 74. sonoQueen delivers thermal energy between 60~70 on each treatment area resulting in immediate tightening while stimulating new collagen production.

Q. How long do the results last?

A. Studies have shown that many patients treated with HIFU continue to have fresh young collagen up to a year following the procedure. However, as the skin continues to age the average period of effect lasts 6 months. Treatment effect differs among patients based on environmental and genetic factors.

Q. How is HIFU different from Laser treatment?

A. Lasers typically address issues in the superficial layers of the skin (e.g. fine lines, wrinkles, pigment changes). HIFU addresses the deep skin layer and the foundational layer addressed in cosmetic surgery that lift and lend support to the skin. Therefore, the two technologies are quite complementary.
